In this 1/2 day workshop, participants take stock of their lifestyles and learn how to make lasting changes that will enhance their resilience.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome: The Mind-Bowel Connection

IBS is one of the most common gastroenterological illnesses.  Yet, it is poorly understood and difficult to treat medically.  Many IBS patients feel trapped by their symptoms as the number and type of activities they feel comfortable in seems to shrink when symptoms worsen.  Studies show that IBS symptoms are influenced by many factors, including psychosocial stress, and ineffectual coping methods.  Many IBS patients also exhibit signs of clinical depression and anxiety.  Clinical research has suggested that the most effective treatment strategy for IBS is a combination of psychotherapy and medical treatment.  We incorporate the findings of the latest research on the treatment of IBS, combining cognitive-behavioural interventions, meditation, and interpersonal therapy to help participants understand and manage their symptoms.  This small group (5-8 participants) meets weekly for a total of 10 to 12 sessions.

Healing the Healer: A Compassion Fatigue Workshop

It has been said that compassion fatigue is the price of caring for others. Prolonged exposure to the pain and suffering of others is life altering. It can adversely affect quality of life and capacity to continue to function effectively in the care giving role. Those who care for the ill, suffering or helpless are at risk for becoming physically and emotionally exhausted. Their ability to cope with the ongoing stresses of daily life can become depleted, and their confidence, effectiveness, sense of safety, and even ability to trust may be compromised. In this full day workshop, participants develop an understanding of factors contributing to compassion fatigue, learn to identify its symptoms, become aware of personal traits that may increase vulnerability to compassion fatigue and learn strategies for healing themselves and/or reducing vulnerability. (Note: this workshop is not a substitute for therapy/treatment.) For all caregivers of people or animals who are seeking balance, wellness, and renewed sense of purpose.

Overcoming Shyness and Social Anxiety: Small Group

For 7% of the population, being in a social situation can be a painful experience.  The fear of saying or doing the wrong thing, of being judged negatively, criticized, teased or rejected by others can interfere with living a normal and satisfying life. These people suffer from extreme shyness or social anxiety.  Ironically, most people with social anxiety really want to have friends, go to parties, date, and otherwise have normal social relationships, but their feelings of inadequacy, and fear of public embarrassment get in the way.  Often, social anxiety can include physical symptoms such as dry mouth, rapid heart beat, blushing, etc.  People with extreme shyness, or social anxiety, can overcome their fear of social situations.  Cognitive-Behaviour therapy is recommended for treatment of social anxiety.  Our cognitive therapy oriented psychoeducational group for social anxiety meets weekly for 10 sessions, with “booster” sessions at one month and three months.

The Power to Bounce Back: A Resiliency Workshop

There is an increasing body of research on something psychologists call “resilience”, which refers to a person's capacity to bounce back after stress or trauma. Resilience distinguishes the person who is able to take problems and tragedy in stride, putting it all behind him/her, from the person who succumbs to stress, showing emotional and physical signs of burnout or break down. In this 1/2 day workshop, participants take stock of their lifestyles and learn how to make lasting changes that will enhance their resilience.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)

At any given time, about 5% of the population is seriously contemplating suicide.  Suicide is a particularly serious problem among teens, the elderly, and those facing significant life problems.  Most people who commit suicide have found ways to signal their intent, but these signals may not have been recognized or taken seriously.  What can be done to reduce the risk of suicide and make ours a suicide safer community?  Come to an ASIST workshop and learn how to identify the signs that a person may be at risk for suicide, and how to intervene to reduce the risk of suicide.  ASIST is a highly acclaimed, structured, evidence-based program that is suitable for anyone in a position to help others, regardless of previous training or experience.  ASIST is appropriate for lay people and professionals alike, including parents, teachers, nurses, counselors, EMS workers, police, physicians, psychiatrists, volunteers, clergy, virtually anyone. ASIST workshops take place over two consecutive days.  Participants learn through discussion, demonstrations, award-winning videos, and practicing suicide intervention skills.  Upon completion of the two days, participants receive a certificate.

Suicide Talk

SuicideTALK is aimed at most members of a community. Its goal is to help make direct, open and honest talk about suicide easier. SuicideTALK is an exploration of the question, “Should we talk about suicide?” By looking at this question in a number of different ways, session members may discover and uncover some of the beliefs and ideas about suicide in their community— and in themselves. Ways to help a person at risk are discussed. The pain of those touched by suicide is acknowledged. But SuicideTALK is primarily an exploration of some of the most fundamental attitudinal issues about suicide. It helps session members clarify their beliefs. Such clarification typically creates a strong foundation for future suicide prevention work. Session members then examine the range of things they could do to help prevent suicide. Session members are encouraged to act on their commitments in the future and to invest in suicide prevention in their community.  This is a 90 minute to 2 hour session suitable for all audiences from high school up.
