Samantha Sherer, (C)OACCPPAs a certified member of the OACCPP, Samantha Sherer, facilitates groups focused on creating Life Skills to cope with disordered eating, anxiety, trauma, self-esteem and coping with life issues. As an Arts-based Psychotherapist in one-on-one practice, she works with clients to develop insight and holistic Life Skills in order to feel better prepared for future difficulties. Her down to earth approach encourages deep therapeutic rapport and the trust required by clients to have fun with the arts, while exploring difficult issues. “I work holistically; by discovering possible underlying issues rather than dealing directly with symptoms presented. I prefer not to pathologize or label behaviours. For clients who are not interested in working through the arts, I offer client-centred talk-based psychotherapy.” What is Expressive Arts Therapy (EAT)? Using arts-based, non-verbal techniques, (visual, movement, drama, music or poetry) clients explore issues that may have been resistant to treatment via traditional talk-based therapies. Often, clients and practitioners focus on the presenting symptoms instead of the underlying problems. In EAT sessions, by doing artwork around their “story” clients see the issue from a new perspective. The insight they develop helps modify habitual, symptomatic behaviour. The discussion portion of each session helps integrate the newfound awareness into everyday life by outlining concrete skills and pragmatic applications. Notes are taken during session for the client to take home, to further ensure integration of insights.
