WHAT IS COACHING?
Business/personal coaching is a relatively new phenomenon.
Coaches:
- Help clients set better goals and assist them in reaching those goals
- Motivate clients to do more than they would have done on their own
- Focus clients in order to produce quicker results
- Facilitate greater accomplishments by providing tools, support, and structure
How does coaching differ from:
- Consulting
- Consulting reviews a situation and suggests a solution. Coaches work with individual clients to develop self-generated goals and then help ensure that they really happen by supporting their implementation.
- Therapy
- Therapists work on personal issues, get into the past, or deal with understanding why a person acts in a particular way. A coach's goal is to deal with practical, here and now issues quickly - to impact today's outcomes in clients' lives.
- Training
- Trainers teach their clients new skills. Coaches also teach new skills to clients. On a one-on-one basis, coaches ensure that new skills and concepts are fully understood, and incorporated into day-to-day practise.
- Sports Coaching
- A business/personal coach is similar to a personal athletic trainer; however, business/personal coaches work with the total professional and personal skills of an individual. Coaching incorporates sports principles like teamwork, going for the goal and being your best. Our coaching philosophy is not based on competition, or the win or lose perspective. Our approach is to create, and teach clients to create, win/win outcomes.
- Best Friend
- A best friend is a person with whom you share aspects of your day-to-day existence. A coach is a professional with the experience to give you objective advice about the most important parts of your life and/or business. People should have both a best friend and a coach.
- Who hires a coach and why?
- The person who hires a coach wants more. They want to grow. They want to learn. They want assistance in reaching the next level. Coaches help their clients achieve their goals, quickly.
Organizations are only as strong as their leaders. Organizations hire coaches to optimize the performance of their key executives in order to maximize the results of the corporation.
- Do coaches work on personal or business/professional goals?
- Both. The line between personal and business life are blurring. Coaches are professionals who are trained to work with all aspects of the complexity of each individual.
- Why Hire a Coach?
- Business is moving at the speed of light. Executives face major challenges and stresses including:
-
-
- fast paced environment
- more decisions, and less time to think them through
- more variables in and higher stakes for every decision
- information flooding
- fierce competition
- limited resources
- complex people equations
- physical and emotional energy drains
- ever-evolving technology
- integration of personal/professional lives
- need for calm and insight in stressful situations
- no one to turn to for advice

Questions you might have?
- What happens when a coach is hired?
- An initial meeting determines client objectives. The terms of reference (expectations, process, cost, etc.) for the coaching relationship are clearly articulated and agreed upon.
A behavioural assessment, surveys and written correspondence may be used in order to clarify the current situation.
A plan is designed and a commitment is made as to what is to be accomplished
- How do a coach and client meet?
- After the initial face-to-face meeting, the most of the contact will be a weekly 30-minute telephone conversation at a predetermined time. If more time is needed or special circumstances warrant it, other conversations will be held.
- How long is the usual starting commitment?
- A three to six month commitment is common. After one month, the coaching relationship can be terminated either by the client or by the coach.
- Can a coach be hired for a special short-term project?
- Absolutely. Specific challenges that you and/or your company are facing may require coaching assistance for a limited time.
- What does it cost?
- Once the parameters of the coaching arrangement are decided, a monthly fee is agreed upon. This fee will vary depending on time commitments, the nature of the goals/challenges, and other factors. A retainer of one month in advance is required. Invoices are payable at the start of each four week period.
Retaining a coach is an investment in yourself!
